Build Change is non-profit social enterprise, dedicated to saving lives in earthquakes and typhoons. Following the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Aceh, Indonesia, Build Change began designing disaster-resistant houses and schools in areas likely to be affected by natural disasters. Their work has since spanned many different countries and continents, including China, Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, Nepal and the Philippines. In addition to building houses and schools, Build Change has trained more than 25,000 people in disaster-resistant design and construction techniques. Their work has led to over 48,700 safer buildings, and helped an estimated 245,000 people.
Studies show that visitors are 75% more likely to return to your site if it loads in under three seconds. Unfortunately for Build Change, their website was taking a lot longer than that, resulting in poor search engine rankings and undesirable bounce rates, meaning that people weren’t sticking around to find out more about Build Change. This meant lost opportunities for potential sponsorships, partnerships and volunteers. Build Change approached me to help them create a website that loads instantly, so that they can spread the word about the incredible work they are doing to as many people as possible.
Using ThemeCo’s innovative and highly functional X Theme, I created a stunning website that does justice to vital work that Build Change achieves on a daily basis. I also employed a number of speed optimisation techniques to ensure that the Build Change website loads in an instant, and therefore keeps visitors on-board to find out more about the cause. In doing so, we increased the potential for these visitors to become donors or volunteers.
